May nothing you dismay!&#8221; Scrooge seized the ruler with such energy of action, that the singer fled in terror<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Let&#8217;s be honest, the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.org\/details\/1843christmascar00dickuoft\/page\/16\/mode\/1up\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">fleeting appearance<\/a>&nbsp;of a drawing instrument wielded with intent is not the first thing that springs to mind from Charles Dickens&#8217; 1843 classic&nbsp;<em>A Christmas Carol<\/em>, a tale positively overflowing with memorable quotes and imagery. To all appearances it was a typical promotional rule of the kind given away to clients in their thousands by travelling company representatives, especially around Christmas time as an inducement to renewed business over the coming year. However, it lacks the usual contact details and particulars of products and\/or services generally found on such giveaways. Happily, this second visitation turned up a solitary reference from an obscure 1934 trade journal,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/books.google.co.uk\/books?id=zBw5lsb0xu8C&amp;newbks=1&amp;newbks_redir=0&amp;printsec=frontcover&amp;dq=%22Marley+bros+ltd%22&amp;q=%22Marley+bros+ltd%22&amp;hl=en&amp;source=gb_mobile_entity&amp;redir_esc=y#%22Marley%20bros%20ltd%22\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>The Ideal Kinema &amp; Studio<\/em><\/a>. It turns out that the premises of Birmingham firm Marley Bros of Wellhead Lane were known around this time as &#8220;Ghost Works&#8221; &#8211; in obvious reference to Dickens&#8217; character &#8211; and not inappropriately for a company that specialised in the manufacture of locks, ironmongery and door furniture!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Marley Bros features regularly in architectural publications of the 1920s and 30s as a metalwork contractor to numerous prestigious buildings. The business dates back to the early years of the twentieth century, and before that to the Victorian-era partnership of Marley &amp; Buckingham. They were clearly alert to the marketing potential of Dickens&#8217; famous door knocker (based on an\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/holidays.radiotimes.com\/travel-news\/scrooges-london-london-a-christmas-carol-sightseeing\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">actual example<\/a>, now apparently lost), not to mention the locks and chains that Scrooge&#8217;s spectral tormentor was doomed to drag behind him for eternity, as seen in the original\u00a01843 illustration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/graphography.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/Marleys_Ghost_1843.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"680\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/graphography.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/Marleys_Ghost_1843-680x1024.jpg\" alt=\"Marley's Ghost illustrated by John Leech from the 1843 first edition of Charles Dickens' book A Christmas Carol \" class=\"wp-image-898\" srcset=\"https:\/\/graphography.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/Marleys_Ghost_1843-680x1024.jpg 680w, https:\/\/graphography.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/Marleys_Ghost_1843-199x300.jpg 199w, https:\/\/graphography.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/Marleys_Ghost_1843-768x1157.jpg 768w, https:\/\/graphography.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/Marleys_Ghost_1843-1019x1536.jpg 1019w, https:\/\/graphography.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/Marleys_Ghost_1843.jpg 1269w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 680px) 100vw, 680px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Unfortunately the Dickensian tie-in did not prove lucrative in the long run, and the business was&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thegazette.co.uk\/London\/issue\/38988\/page\/4066\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">voluntarily wound up<\/a>&nbsp;in 1950. Even so, their registered office continued to be known as&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thegazette.co.uk\/London\/issue\/38991\/page\/4107\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Ghost Works<\/a>&nbsp;right until the bitter end.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The firm was also implicated in what was quite possibly the only legal trial ever to involve&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.org\/details\/tbnaej-94\/page\/508\/mode\/1up\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">bribery with a case of&nbsp;mathematical instruments<\/a>, but that&#8217;s another story&#8230;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Having indulged in a little bit of Christmas past, it remains only for me to wish all my readers a happy Christmas present, and all the best for the future year!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>&#8230;&nbsp;but at the first sound of &#8220;God bless you merry gentlemen!
