{"id":803,"date":"2023-11-11T23:24:52","date_gmt":"2023-11-11T23:24:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/graphography.org\/?p=803"},"modified":"2023-11-17T09:45:02","modified_gmt":"2023-11-17T09:45:02","slug":"happy-200th-amslerversary","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/graphography.org\/index.php\/2023\/11\/11\/happy-200th-amslerversary\/","title":{"rendered":"Happy 200th Amslerversary!"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>While doing a bit of planimeter research, I noticed that <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Jakob_Amsler-Laffon\">Wikipedia<\/a> gives the date of 11 November 1823 for Jakob Amsler-Laffon&#8217;s birthday &#8211; 200 years ago today! Amsler was a Swiss professor of mathematics, best known for his 1854 invention of the polar planimeter, an area-measuring instrument of beautiful simplicity that was to become the dominant form for more than a century.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\" id=\"amsler-publicity\"><a href=\"https:\/\/graphography.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/amsler_polar_planimeter_early.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"590\" src=\"https:\/\/graphography.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/amsler_polar_planimeter_early-1024x590.jpg\" alt=\"Early version of Amsler's polar planimeter\" class=\"wp-image-804\" srcset=\"https:\/\/graphography.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/amsler_polar_planimeter_early-1024x590.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/graphography.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/amsler_polar_planimeter_early-300x173.jpg 300w, https:\/\/graphography.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/amsler_polar_planimeter_early-768x443.jpg 768w, https:\/\/graphography.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/amsler_polar_planimeter_early.jpg 1489w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>However, as ever with Amsler, nothing is as straightforward as it seems. As a formality, I attempted to track down some corroborating sources (preferably contemporary) for Amsler&#8217;s birth date. While the <a href=\"https:\/\/hls-dhs-dss.ch\/de\/articles\/028770\/2016-11-25\/\">Historisches Lexicon der Schweiz (HLS)<\/a> and German language version of <a href=\"https:\/\/de.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Jakob_Amsler-Laffon\">Wikipedia<\/a> both agree with the 11 November date, other online sources including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.deutsche-biographie.de\/pnd119159341.html\">Deutsche Biographie<\/a> and Stadtarchiv Schaffhausen (<a href=\"http:\/\/webcache.googleusercontent.com\/search?q=cache:BbjKGad6mcUJ:www.stadtarchiv-schaffhausen.ch\/biographien\/index.php%3Fid%3D10343%26type%3D98%26no_cache%3D1&amp;hl=en&amp;gl=uk\">cached page<\/a>, original currently offline) give a different date, the 16th of November 1823.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In print, the latter date is backed up by the <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.org\/details\/dictionaryofsci001gill\/page\/146\/mode\/2up\">Dictionary of Scientific Biography<\/a> and Julius Gysel&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.e-periodica.ch\/cntmng?pid=sbg-002%3A1957%3A34%3A%3A388\">1957 article<\/a> from <em>Schaffhauser Beitr\u00e4ge zur vaterl\u00e4ndischen Geschichte<\/em>. Going back further still, most of the sources published during Jakob Amsler&#8217;s lifetime or or upon his death in 1912 agree with the 16 November birth date (see, for example, the E-Periodica scans <a href=\"https:\/\/www.e-periodica.ch\/digbib\/view?pid=dis-001%3A1901%3A5%3A%3A372&amp;referrer=search#372\">here<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.e-periodica.ch\/digbib\/view?pid=sng-005%3A1912%3A95%3A%3A283&amp;referrer=search#281\">here<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.e-periodica.ch\/digbib\/view?pid=sbz-002%3A1912%3A59%3A%3A837&amp;referrer=search#837\">here<\/a>). Unfortunately I have not been able to locate any genealogical sources, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.familysearch.org\/en\/wiki\/Switzerland_Online_Genealogy_Records\">Switzerland&#8217;s church records<\/a> of the time being rather patchy and largely uncatalogued.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It would therefore seem that the 11 November date crept in erroneously, perhaps with the HLS, and has since been propagated across the web from the Wikipedia entry. Ironically, the first reference on the English language Wikipedia page is to the <em>Dictionary of Scientific Biography<\/em>, which got the date right!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Therefore, in celebration of the (almost) bicentenary of Amsler&#8217;s birth, I thought it would be fun to post a few planimeter-related items over the following days. Pape (the former of which definitely used push-button cases for a time), but on this occasion nothing seems to fit. The typeface of the serial number is unlike any other Blankenburg example I have seen. On the other hand, none of the usual D&amp;P features such as the curved index window or elaborate tracer point are present.
