I was fortunate enough to find a copy of the latter (ballpoints are a b\u00eate noire of mine) and one in reasonable condition for its 60+ years. Both versions are listed in a 1961 Aristo catalogue, which is the only source I have found for their product numbers &#8211; the pencil itself is unmarked, save for the ARISTO logo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/graphography.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/aristo_slide_rule_pencil_1961_catalogue.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"961\" height=\"527\" src=\"https:\/\/graphography.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/aristo_slide_rule_pencil_1961_catalogue.jpg\" alt=\"Aristo 6103 Rechenstift slide rule pencil 1961 catalogue illustration\" class=\"wp-image-260\" srcset=\"https:\/\/graphography.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/aristo_slide_rule_pencil_1961_catalogue.jpg 961w, https:\/\/graphography.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/aristo_slide_rule_pencil_1961_catalogue-300x165.jpg 300w, https:\/\/graphography.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/aristo_slide_rule_pencil_1961_catalogue-768x421.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 961px) 100vw, 961px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The design was protected by a utility patent filed in May 1959 that can be seen <a href=\"https:\/\/depatisnet.dpma.de\/DepatisNet\/depatisnet?action=pdf&amp;docid=DE000001794100U&amp;xxxfull=1\">here<\/a>. It presents two versions of the Rechenstift, one identical to the production version and an alternative three-sided variant with two sliding faces and a wraparound cursor. It is unclear whether this is a result of Aristo&#8217;s patented spring friction device (indicated by label f on fig. 2 of the patent drawings above), or else simply due to the age of the pencil. As a pencil it is too unwieldy for serious drawing purposes, and the small form factor severely limits its usefulness as a slide rule.
