It was interesting to discover that this society <a href=\"https:\/\/skule.ca\/engsoc\">still exists<\/a> today, thought to the oldest formal engineering organization in Canada having been established as long ago as 1885.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/graphography.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/eichmueller_patent_university_of_toronto_wallet_case_01-scaled.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" src=\"https:\/\/graphography.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/eichmueller_patent_university_of_toronto_wallet_case_01-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"University of Toronto Engineering Society Dietzgen Federal wallet set case details\" class=\"wp-image-198\" srcset=\"https:\/\/graphography.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/eichmueller_patent_university_of_toronto_wallet_case_01-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/graphography.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/eichmueller_patent_university_of_toronto_wallet_case_01-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/graphography.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/eichmueller_patent_university_of_toronto_wallet_case_01-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/graphography.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/eichmueller_patent_university_of_toronto_wallet_case_01-1536x1024.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/graphography.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/eichmueller_patent_university_of_toronto_wallet_case_01-2048x1365.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The compasses in this set are clearly from a later date, confirmed by the stamp &#8220;PAT 9.9.1922&#8221; on the inside leg. Opposite this is a square with the letter &#8220;F&#8221; which had been puzzling me for some time until a fellow enthusiast pointed out that this was the usual marking for the Dietzgen Federal range. It is funny that Dietzgen had never crossed my mind, even though I knew that the US patent referred to was taken out by German maker Eichm\u00fcller (later Ecobra) who was represented in North America by Dietzgen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/graphography.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/eichmueller_patent_university_of_toronto_wallet_case_03-scaled.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" src=\"https:\/\/graphography.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/eichmueller_patent_university_of_toronto_wallet_case_03-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"University of Toronto Engineering Society Dietzgen Federal wallet set details\" class=\"wp-image-200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/graphography.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/eichmueller_patent_university_of_toronto_wallet_case_03-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/graphography.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/eichmueller_patent_university_of_toronto_wallet_case_03-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/graphography.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/eichmueller_patent_university_of_toronto_wallet_case_03-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/graphography.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/eichmueller_patent_university_of_toronto_wallet_case_03-1536x1024.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/graphography.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/eichmueller_patent_university_of_toronto_wallet_case_03-2048x1365.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Dietzgen&#8217;s Federal instruments were similar in design to their flagship Gem Union range, but manufactured with a less refined finish as an economical alternative. Their 1928 catalogue notes that &#8220;Compasses and Dividers are equipped with our patented differential straightening device&#8221;, to which the <a href=\"https:\/\/depatisnet.dpma.de\/DepatisNet\/depatisnet?action=pdf&amp;docid=US000001425133A&amp;xxxfull=1\">patent<\/a> marking refers. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Returning to the University of Toronto Engineering Society, I was surprised to read that to this day, &#8220;The society operates the engineering stores, which supplies students with most of their school supplies and instruments.&#8221; Clearly even a century ago they had sufficient clout to procure custom sets from Dietzgen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Predictably, the present day <a href=\"https:\/\/stores.skule.ca\/\">Engineering Stores<\/a> no longer sells drawing sets, being mostly focused on clothing and books. However, I must confess to having cracked a wry smile on spotting the sole remaining drawing instrument in their <a href=\"https:\/\/stores.skule.ca\/catalogue\/Stationery\">online catalogue<\/a>: an Aristo TZ-Dreieck set square for CA$6.60.
